CSNY performing a nasty and acidic (and funky?) version of Neil Young's Southern Man at the Filmore East in 1970.

This is from the soundtrack album Journey Through the Past.

Thank you for sharing this with us. And this is no criticism of you, but, the South still hasn't fixed that particular problem. Yes, I know, racism runs rampant in many places, including Northern "ghettos", barrios, West Coast trailer parks, New England estates..., and hopefully, things will continue to get better. Soon. As for Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, and the rest of the south, "hopefully....." Peace, from Seattle.

Of late, I've been tossing this word about a lot, but Neil Young truly is BADASS. BAD-MF-ASS. How many other artists, then or now, or in between, could have done such a song. And, made it successful. How many artists would have even attempted such. Not many. Mr. Young,....I,..no, (and I don't care what anyone says) we are in your debt.

many thanks for the info to ZuhZuhzombie,.Much more than I knew.I just knew The Skynards didn't like Neil for the song Southern man!! Happy to know they were friends.

Southern man did cause trouble between the Lynard Skynard Band and himself especially between the band member Ronnie Van Zant!!!!

...... Also, as a result of a bet, Ronnie's grave was desecrated when some people attempted to dig him up to find out whether or not he was buried in the T-Shirt.......... True story, look it up! His family had to have the grave moved to a different location and had the coffin encased in concrete to discourage further tampering!

Neil Young and Ronnie Van Zant were not friends ... they had never met each other. Van Zant claimed it was all in good fun and he and most of the members of Skynyrd were 'Neil Young Fan's'. .... Neil just thought it was cool to hear his name mentioned in a song on the radio. By the way, Ronnie was buried in a Neil Young 'Tonight's The Night' T-Shirt that he often wore while performing.....

@timmy707707 Wrong. Lynyrd Skynyrd, particularly Ronnie Van Zant, wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" as a -direct- response the the two Neil Young penned songs, "Alabama" and "Southern Man". It is well publicized, talked about in interviews, *and* the two artists remained respective of one and other's music. Note Ronnie Van Zants Neil Young t-shirt at live Skynryd shows. Of course Skynyrd's response came after the Neil Young songs. How else would they be protested? How old are you, Timmy707707?

@amerocker The novelty and rarity of this album outweighs its quality. This is a great track, and up to this there's some great live versions of songs - but ultimately Alabama, Are You Ready for the Country and Words have all been remastered on Harvest (the long version of Words on Archives) and the whole thing lacks structure and explanation - particularly with fading out lyrics and random chatter. Time Fades Away on the other hand...

@mymindourdream This song was written in 1970.....what you read is absolutely wrong. Sweet Home Alabama was not written until 1974...there never was a quarrel...don't be such a dope!

Great performance! Why, tell me why, won't Neil Young remaster 'Journey Through the Past' and release it on CD!?!?!?

@makiavelli999 Also, the GREAT Young song Powderfinger was written for Skynard.

Thanks, my copy I have played for years and its great to hear this song again so clean. :Love it when they start to lope, this IS the quintesenntial version of this song and only Neil Young can pull off a single note guitar solo like he does. These boys got soul. BTW, album and film version of this song are different and this is superior. Never released on cd.

The youngtimers suck bigtime compared to Neil Young, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and JIMI HENDRIX. Now its mostly crap packaged with a streamlined image.. But good stuff sometimes come from the underground.. The solos on this track are groovy! :-))
