The Brooklyn based quartet Crystal Stilts recently compiled the two releases of their very own brand of new-wave flavored garage pop - a 7" and a 12" - on to a single disc and released it on the label Woodsist and digitally on eMusic Select.

It's an absolutely brilliant little record that makes other slightly JAMC-sounding acts pale in comparison. In addition to the obvious JAMC influence I personally hear traces of Joy Division, early Felt and perhaps a dash of early Orange Juice as well.

The band is set to release a proper debut album in the end of October 2008 - it's to be titled Alight of Night.

I love this track - Converging in the Quiet - for the special "ambient" twist to it and it reminds me of one of the great anthems of 90s ambient techno - "Tha" by Aphex Twin from the classic album Selected Ambient Works 85-92.

I'm a big fan of Joy Division and I'm kind of surprised people are comparing the two.

I discovered this great band cos I was looking at some Edie videos and someone had used this song with Edie's Warhol screen test. So cool not to go for the obvious Cult song about Edie.

Such awesome intro!

The Ocular Occult

I should also mention that I prefer this version to the one that appeared on the LP.

The Ocular Occult

This song was recorded before their full length album that features departure was released, so this is technically an early version/demo of departure.

This sounds like new order before they became new order...lol

Perhaps they saw the success of Chuck Berry doing the same thing. Plus, it's easier.
