I co-wrote "True Love" with my songwriting partner, Kelly Harland. It was first recorded by the band Lazy Racer on their 1980 A&M album, "Formula II." This version by Crystal Gayle is much closer in spirit to our original demo of the song, and was the title track of her 1982 album on Elektra Records. Although "True Love" itself wasn't released as a single, three other songs from the collection reached No.1 on Billboard's Country music chart: "Our Love Is On The Fault Line," "Baby What About You," and " 'Til I Gain Control Again" (Crystal's duet with Rodney Crowell).

In 2008, the Demon Music Group in England reissued "True Love" paired with another of Crystal's albums, "Hollywood, Tennessee," in their series of CD releases of her catalog on Edsel Records.

Hi - you mentioned Lazy Racer first recorded True Love two years before Crystal Gayle did so was it her who asked to include the Song or was it put to her as a possible suitable Title track for the album? be very interested to hear. Great writing by the way, that first verse is magic, if there was one, what was the Song playing on Radio!? ... hope its ok to ask.

I'm envious. I've only seen Crystal in person three times: in 1980 & '81 at The Charlie Daniels Band's Volunteer Jams VI & VII in Nashville (when Kelly & I also performed), and in a full concert on the road while the "True Love" album was enjoying its ride on the charts. She is, as I'm sure you've experienced yourself, one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people you could ever hope to meet. If you get the chance to speak with her, please give her my best.

Thanks for your kind words. We wrote "True Love" while under contract as staff writers to our music publisher. In exchange for years of salaries and other financial advances, we ceded control of the copyrights to our tunes (retaining the songwriting share of potential royalties). The company gambled that their investment in us would pay off someday, and we were able to live as full-time writers and hone our producing and arranging skills in the studio. It seemed like a fair trade at the time.

Thanks. I've always thought that the entire album was one of Crystal's strongest efforts, too. The Demon Music Group/Edsel Records "twofer" reissue is quite a nice package, with excellent sound and a 24-page booklet filled with photos, lyrics and a very informative, well-written overview of that phase of her career.
