Wells Cathedral Choir sing Crown of Thorns by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The song tells about Jewish children stripping the rose garden bare and making a crown of thorns for Jesus.

Lyrics.

When Jesus Christ was yet a child

He had a garden small and wild,

Where-in he cherished roses fair,

And wove them into garlands there.

Now once as summertime drew nigh,

There came a troop of children by,

And seeing roses on the tree,

With shouts they plucked them merrily.

'Do you bind roses in your hair?'

They cried, in scorn, to Jesus there.

The boy said humbly: 'Take, I pray,

All but the naked thorns away,'

Then of the thorns he made a crown,

And with rough fingers pressed it down,

Till on his forehead fair and young,

Red drops of blood like roses sprung.

Based on a poem by the American poet Richard Henry Stoddard (1825-

1903)

Because of the racism I am not really happy with the any of the usual texts and wonder if anyone feels inspired, say by the little prince or selfish giant stories by Oscar Wilde and the like, to write another. Hmm!

The point I would like to make is that the "legend" is more than likely racist and written to please Tsar Alexander III who was Tchaikovsy's patron and to whom Tchaikovsky was devoted. The Tsar's policies regarding Jews was to disposses and exterminate them as vermin possesed by "greed" - this is in mid 19th century. Hence the "greedy" Jewish children who "stripped the garden" - an allegory for the perceptions of the Russian state at the time. But the music is wonderful The ies were to

Sorry i am not good at this - here is the second part! . "And now how will you make your garland? For not a rose your path adorns." "But you forget," he answered them, "That you have left me still the thorns." They took the thorns, and made a garland, And placed it on his shining head; And where the roses should have shone Were little drops of blood instead! by Alexei Plechtcheev

@evilmongoose1988 Original Russian text Text: The young child Jesus had a garden, Full of roses, rare and red: And thrice a day he watered them, To make a garland for his head. When they were full-blown in the garden, He called the Jewish children there, And each did pluck himself a rose, Until they stripped the garden bare.

No chance. Read below. I am not in any way anti- semetic.

I f I read the poem correctly Jesus himself makes the crown of thorns and places it on his head. It shows his willlingness to suffer and die for us. There's nothing about the other children doing this - all they do is ask if he binds roses in his hair.

my point is that the text doesn't actually say anything about the ethnic origin of the children so why mention it? To do so is, like so much racism, to draw an unnecessary slur across the page. And then to say it is unimportant or to use your expression "a sort of technical, pointless way" is to do likewise.

True in a sort of technical, pointless way, but as Jesus was born a Jew himself it wouldn't actually signify (unless one was to take deliberate offence where none was intended)

Very lovely....just by way of note I don't think it's correct to say that this song is about vandalism by "Jewish" children...the text says nothing about the ethnic origin of the children. The remark could be taken as anti-Semitic
