I love the way they have done this lament, with the subtle rhythm that carries the song along, and the added chorus between stanzas. This song is part of the Christmas story, but is so very sad. It is the song of a mother, holding her baby for the last time, knowing that any minute the soldiers will take her precious baby and bash his brains out. She is lovingly saying goodbye to this, her sweet child. (To avoid this fate, Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus and fled to Egypt, it's in the book of Matthew.)

It commemorates a terrible event when king Herod slaughtered all male children 2 years and under, in his attempt to destroy the Christ child. There is nothing happy or "Christmas" about it!
