Coven - The White Witch Of Rose Hall (1969)

Jinx Dawson was a native of Indianapolis, Indiana who began studying opera and the occult in the late 1960s. She, Ross, and Osborne formed Coven in Chicago in the late 1960s. In 1967 to 1968 they toured on concert bills with Jimmy Page's Yardbirds, the then glam band Alice Cooper, and Vanilla Fudge, among many others. Jinx began and ended each Coven concert with the sign of the horns, being the first to introduce this hand sign into rock pop culture. They were signed to Mercury Records, where they put out their first album, Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls in 1969. The music on the album was hard rock psychedelia; what made it distinctive was the heavy emphasis on diabolical subject matter, including songs such as "The White Witch of Rose Hall" (based on the story of Annie Palmer), "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge", and "Dignitaries of Hell". The album concluded with a 13 minute track of chanting and Satanic prayers called "Satanic Mass" (written by their producer, Bill Traut, of Dunwich Productions). Also included inside the album, was Coven's infamous Black Mass poster, showing members of the group displaying the sign of the horns as they prepared for a Satanic ritual over the naked altar. This is the first photographed use of the Horned Hand Salute and the Inverted Cross in rock music pop culture, Coven being the first occult rock band and the pioneers in that genre. (They also hold the distinction of making one of the first "rock videos" to the title track of their third album, "Blood on the Snow" in 1974, seven years before MTV started in the 1981.)

According to Jinx, "The satanic thing actually was something we were interested in and were studying at the time. When you're younger, you're looking for answers" Not arf.

This entire album (minus the Black Mass performance) is just RIPE for bands to do covers of it's songs! I don't know why more Stoner Rock/Metal and Doom Metal bands don't attempt to cover some of these songs. It'd be cool to hear these songs with a heavier and fuzzier sound. Maybe there are some out there already that I don't yet know about.

That's because 'Black Sabbath' ripped off Coven's style, even song names, and the Occult theme. Two months before 'Black Sabbath' came into existence the manager approached Coven and wanted to 'manage them' Jinx and Coven said no they were happy with their own. Then two months later. 'Mysteriously' Ozzy and Iommi discovered "Occult Rock."

It's not satanic because Sabbath was never serious about it like Coven. The whole idea for the Black Sabbath doom-and-gloom and horror themes came because Geezer Butler noticed people lined up to see Mario Bava's movie Black Sabbath at a theater across from their inn. They just wanted to be the "horror movies" of music. It's all an act, and most Sabbath songs have nothing to do with horror or occult themes.

A history lesson for all metal heads. Coven was really the first band to use Satanic imagery in their music and act. While this isn't metal, it should be required listening for any true metal head.

The first fucking song one the first fucking Black Sabbatch album is about Satan. How is this not satanic? Because Sabbath doesnt have a 24 minute "satanic mass" on the album?

just to be clear more so, coven came before black sabbath by a couple months BUT their music was so satanic for that time and black sabbath are not satanic at all! and also before kiss, DIO, and all others the guys in the band WERE years before to do what is now known as the devil horn sign!

Ozzy Osbourne was already called des-time school. And Geezer took the name "Black Sabbath" a movie that was in theaters, just to be clear.
