Don't know how the crowd stayed in their seats for the whole song. Best version ever.

This band...this song....just wow. Best version of the song I've ever heard. This is really moving.

I've seen them live three times, but I have to admit I think sometimes they stray too far from the original songs. Just my personal preference. I appreciate they do something a bit different with their songs instead of just plodding through the same thing every time, but sometimes it's not just not enjoyable because I can't get into it.

The whole point of a counting crows concert is you go to see something different and original. The melody has nothing to do with how good that song is; it's all in the lyrics. If you want to listen to the original stick the disc in a CD player and hit play. Another thing, if you've seen them once you haven't seen them at all. Every concert is different even if they play the same songs. I've seen Rain King with thunder road on one occasion and hey Susanna on another. Adam Duritz - superstar

And anyway, lets say i had never listened to this song before and I was at this concert, I personally think the way he sings this, in this particular case, has no melody whatsoever and I wouldnt like it anyway. He is singing like when you have a song stuck in your head for days and then you start messing around with the tempo and the melody just because you are tired of having the same melody in your head.

I love every type of music. If you are refering an artist my favorites are van morrison, leonard cohen, tom waits, dire straits, pj harvey, well I can spend a whole day listing artists. I respect your opinion because its your preference but I personally think that if you release a single and people/fans like it, they then go to your concert and they´d like to sing along. Maybe you see it differently because maybe you´ve had the opportunity to see them live a lot but i havent

Here is their show from April 15th, 1994. Rain King is performed live, without any additional ad-libs or much fluff, just like their album. The song starts around the 35:37 mark. This is the best that I could do, so I hope you enjoy it; this is one song that constantly gets new lyrics or is played acoustically. Obviously copy & post this after the youtube dot come above. /watch?v=wzhd0FBnRO0

This is from their November 6th, 1997 performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Musically, it's one of the closest officially released versions there is that stays true to the original, and lyrically there's just a short verse where he ad libs in the middle before going right back into the song. /watch?v=9vVoMH71BrA

I'm just wondering what other music you like? Personally I love the Crows because of all the interpolations he does, some of known songs and others made up on the spot. If I wanted the songs like the album I'd just put that on. But to each his/her own. That said, this blabbering he's interpolating in the middle here is an Ella Fitzgerald song, Somebody To Watch Over Me. It's a classic and is beautiful and I highly suggest you give it a listen, I think you'll like it!

The fact the Crows never play a song the same way twice is exactly what I love about them....

I like it. Sometimes they miss big time with their variations. This performance I like, AND it's recorded well!!!!

*I belong in the service of the queen. I belong anywhere but in between.*Had this song in my head all day. Just had to satisfy that itch. I've loved this song and its lyrics for so long!*Rain King*When I think of heavenDeliver me in a black-winged birdI think of flying down into a sea of pens and feathersAnd all other instruments of faith and sex and GodIn the belly of a black-winged bird.Don't try to feed meI've been here beforeAnd I deserve a little moreI belong in the service of the QueenI belong anywhere but in betweenShe's been crying and I've been thinkingAnd I am the Rain KingAnd I said mama, mama, mama, why am I so aloneI can't go outsideI'm scared I might not make it homeI'm alive, I'm aliveBut I'm sinking inIf there's anyone at home at your place, darlingWhy don't you invite me in?Don't try to bleed meI've been there beforeAnd I deserve a little moreI belong in the service of the QueenI belong anywhere but in betweenShe's been lying and I've been sinkingAnd I am the Rain KingHey, I only want the same as anyoneHenderson is waiting for the sunOh, it seems night endlessly begins and endsAfter all the dreaming I come home againWhen I think of heavenDeliver me in a black-winged birdI think of dyingLay me down in a field of flame and heatherRender up my body into the burning heart of GodIn the belly of a black-winged birdDon't try to bleed meI've been here beforeAnd I deserve a little moreI belong in the service of the queenI belong anywhere but in betweenShe's been dying and I've been drinkingAnd I am the Rain King

yes!! i agree 100 percent... i love this band and specially this song and Ive been searching for live performances of it and I have failed to found ONE that sounds like the original. And its not the the fact that they changed the song, its that this shit that they are doing is not good at all. It feels like a rehearsal and they are just tired of this song and they just do whatever to make it different, just blabber things even if it sounds bad... and it does

It was an observation in jest. I obviously like the song and band if I'm watching a live video.
