The Coon Creek Girls were a popular all-girl "string band" in the Appalachian style of folk music (a precursor of country music) which began in the mid-1930s. Created (and named) by John Lair for his Renfro Valley Barn Dance show, the band originally consisted of sisters Lily May and Rosie Ledford (from Powell County, Kentucky) along with Esther "Violet" Koehler (from Indiana) and Evelyn "Daisey" Lange (from Ohio).

In 1939, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the White House of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, there were numerous musical acts, including Lawrence Tibbett, Marion Anderson, and Kate Smith. Also included were a troupe of Bascom Lunsford's square dancers, and the Coon Creek Girls.[1]

In 1979, John Lair revived the name with the New Coon Creek Girls, a combo which remained popular for several decades, despite numerous changes in line-up.[2]

All black people are not as dumb as Al Sharpton. If racism ever leaves Al has no job. That's why he keeps adding fuel to the fire. And there are some black people that are stupid enough to believe it. But the ones I work with and know aren't. Of course their in music, and are pro's. Some black's just want to blame white people for them being ignorant and uneducated. Operah got off her butt and educated herself and look. The most unlikely candidate there is, and she's a billionaire in bad racist America. ha ha ha. In the SOUTH TOO. you have no excuses left.

These girls used to do some real nasty things behind the general store ....especially with coons. Neither one of them wore drawers based upon what my granddaddy told me.

WTF! A coon is short for raccoon. Goin' coon huntin' is going out and letting the dogs run raccoons(coons) until they tree one. Where the pleasure is found in standing around the campfire just bullshittin', listening to the dogs bark, and occasionally saying something like, "That's ol' Blue, he's out in front.". And Coon Creek implies a creek that has or had raccoons living nearby. You sick racism obsessed people need to get over it.

Some of you idiots amaze me with your "racism" take on anything...."Coon Creek" is a creek named after Raccoons because Raccoons live near the creeks and eat fish. racist morons...

Thanks for posting this. Let me add to those who point out 'coon' has more than one meaning. My parents went to Berea College. Dad was born and raised there, Mom in Ashland. They have these old records and dad says that Coon Creek is well, a creek, named after the raccoons there. When I was kid that's what coon meant to me. So get over it. Unfortunately Mom no longer remembers much, but she still remembers going to Renfro Valley as a girl. She has some funny stories about those trips ... By the way Berea was founded by abolitionists including Cassius Clay.

Lily Mae Ledford tells the story of how the band got its name on her CD "Gems"John Lair came up with the name "Coon Creek Girls" - it was just a marketing name to help the band get gigs. I believe that Lily Mae was from Powell County KYShe also tells the story of playing "How Many Biscuits" for President Roosevelt and the King and Queen of EnglandThere is a "New Coon Creek Girls" now playing around central KY, they are great but of course none of the original members

Nothing racists even came to mind for me until I read your post. First thing I think of is coon hunting at night with dogs & lanterns. That's Racoon for those who might be thinking something else.

There is no better music. Pure, honest, perfect. Remember, you can see Coon Creek Girl Dora Mae Wagers on the Cumberand Highlanders Show on RFD-TV. Thank you for this wonderful song.
