composed by John Dowland, 1563-1626

this setting by Ward Swingle shows why this is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written sung wonderfully by Sue Bickley and The New Swingle Singers

hearing this superb blend of voices, you can understand why this version of the Swingle Singers is my fav

from early 80s

BackRowL2R: Ward Swingle(T), Michael Dore(B), Kym Amps(S)(gotta love that flowing red hair)

FrontRowL2R: Sue Bickley(A), Carol Canning(A), Simon Grant(B), Olive Simpson(S), Philip Sheffield(T)

Come again,

sweet love doth now invite,

thy graces that refrain

to do me due delight.

To see, to hear,

to touch, to kiss,

to die with thee again

in sweetest sympathy

Come again,

that I may cease to mourn

through thy unkind disdain

now left and forlorn.

I sit, I sigh,

I weep, I faint,

I die, in deadly pain

and endless misery

Wow, this is different! After listening to other versions (including the Deller Consort version), this one is far more relaxing. But the tempo and feel of the interpretation don't match the passion and (melo)drama of the lyrics. Think I prefer a faster tempo.

This is from Love Songs for Madrigals and Madriguys. Do you have the entire album digitized? I only have the vinyl copy and am looking for the mp3 tracks.

"To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die with thee again in sweetest sympathy" Yes, to speak of love so well, and plainly, nobody beats the Elizabethans.

@deonaka There are 2 other groups - The King's Singers and Chanticleer - all three groups are phenomenal vocal groups

And the unmistakable, sweet voice of Bill McGlaughlin in the background.

leaves modern music for dead. Relaxing and profound. No histrionics or bullshit.

Beautiful.. but slow.. And I would like to hear more passion, especially in the chorus..

@musiccoloratura I agree and would add that Sting's "reach" (number of views on YT) is greater than all of the other wonderful performances, such as this one, combined = influence, discovery, et al.

@gluefish this recording is from the 80s not the 70s ~ in the photo Ward Swingle appears older than the others.

I'm confused now... nexxie96 stated this was recorded in the 1970's - wouldn't have been the ORIGINAL Swingle Singers, not the NEW Swingle Singers? This YouTube has it entitled "Come Again - The New Swingle Singers"

We are doing this song in my choral conducting class. I've been studying the score for a week and couldn't figure out how I wanted to approach and conduct the piece. After listening to this, I am now inspired and have begun to form an interpretation of the piece that I feel is much more faithful to the composers intentions. Thanks for uploading this great piece of music!
