I'm working thru Pete's 'Jim Croce' series from Homespun right now. He says that at the time he was liking the sound of a National medium (in tortoise shell pattern). I have switched from fingernails (used to be a James Taylor purest) to picks. I bought a selection and my favorite are the ProPik thumb pick (large) and the Fred Kelly Freedom Pick (large) in polycarb. I like polycarb over the derlin. I have some good ole Dunlop finger picks and find them very secure & comfortable
