But without the subgenres the fans would be lost in the large maze of releases every month. It is a natural development to have subdivisions, best example is death metal, of course. Take a closer look. "Metal is metal" has been 25 years ago when Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slayer made metal big.

@SomeRandomTangent They are tight regardless, I've seen all of those bands live and envy their ability to play so in synch and on tempo, you can definitely hear that they have practiced their rhythms together to a click.

@cobhc987654321 also the general lyrical theming is different, the tuning used varies, eg black metal band Anaal nathrakh, uses drop B tuning for their early songs, and death metal band Necrophagist varies between drop C and tuned up 1 from standard(spaced on what the tuning is)

@emptyhead666 Black Metal generally features more tremolo picking and is focused on creating a dark atmosphere, and usually is relatively simple. Death Metal is a lot more riff based and heavier. Try compare Mayhem - Funeral Fog to Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face for a good example of the huge difference. Or, perhaps, wikipedia?
