pistols don't went with the plan of "be bad boys", they only were common street boys, drunkards and thieves. they was rejected for any company who took them. many of they concerts were disasters. don't have good songs? really? god save the queen, anarchy in the uk, satellite, no fellings, holidays in the sun, bodies, new york... they start with the real street punk, bands like cockney rejects follow them, and obviously it's more easy do something more "hard" after listen the first band

it's true that sex pistols were manipulated by mclaren, but he don't made the songs or the "attitude", he only documented every disaster which involved the band and sell it to the press. he dressd them sometimes too (which they don't matter because any new clothes was well received). he only took a band (who was started by steve jones and paul cook) of "rioter youngs" without big brains and put them in some dangerou and scandal places and situations, the rest was wait for the tabloid press

i don't understand why always the rejects fans compare cockney rejects with sex pistols and despise them sex pistols was the first rock and roll band with lumpen-renegade-street attitude. nobody have balls to do a song like god save the queen and play it in the jubilee of queen elizabeth! and they were poor, not snobs or rich kids

Forgot to mention that the film 'Rough Cut and Ready Dubbed', from which this clip is taken, must be unique in that as far as I know it is the only chronicle of the period from the end of punk to the arrival of the new romantic movement, i.e. approximately 1978 to 1981. Although that period is somewhat overlooked now, there were some excellent bands around, as can be seen from the film; bands that had their own musical and dress style, yet escaped becoming video or MTV 'clones'.

I can hear the influence of the Rejects in so many modern acts, from 'heavy' bands, to hip-hop and mainstream. I first saw them performing 'The greatest Cockney rip off' on TOTP back in 1980. However, it is only thirty years later that I really 'discovered' and appreciate their cut-down, back-to-basics and no frills approach to music. It is sad that they were so underrated and berated in their heyday by the music press. Jeff Gegus's book 'Cockney Reject' is well worth a read.

The Cockney rejects clip is from a 1982 documentary called "rough cut and ready dubbed", and you can get it from play.com for a measly £5, hope that helps mate

@wutstock Definitely. The Sex Pistols have like two decent songs while the Rejects' first two albums fucking kill it song after song after song
