I wouldn't say Ben E. King mumbles, but I WOULD say he doesn't hold his notes. He's a very "staccato" singer.

I've never heard this version. What a revelation! Thanks to the poster. On the question of mumbling or poor diction, black artists were sometimes asked to slur or mumble in order to sound "soulful". (See interview with Ruby Garnett of Ruby and the Romantics on singing 'Our Day Will Come'. She refused to do so and the music is better for it.) I truly appreciate singers like Clyde McPhatter for their beautiful phrasing and beautiful voices.

Clyde was an original and part owner of the Drifters. Ben E. King was his replacement when Clyde was drafted (my recollection here).
