Martin, quite pleasantly surprised to see you chime in on this thread! I only became aware of the Cleaners a few years ago when I read Richie Unterberger's "Urban Spacemen and Wayfaring Strangers." I really enjoy your gift for melodies, and I like how you use nostalgia as a way to comment on the present. I also really enjoyed Giles Smith's hilarious "Lost in Music" memoir. Best wishes from Virginia--wish you would favor us with a tour someday!

It is Luke, yes. It was early 1984 when I wrote this. Only 4 years after Lennon's death. I would have been about 30 then...I had this sense of time having got past me. There was also a feeling that the US and Russia were still about to Duke it out over various prevailing grudges. Tense times, but creative times. Thanks for writing in. It made me remember.... The intro is an old Speak and Spell machine by the way.

It just occurred to me this song is most likely about the death of John Lennon. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison called themselves Johnny and the Moondogs in the early days. This might be common knowledge, but I had no idea until I researched myself. Just in case anyone else was wondering what the hell this song means.

I think Martin Newell is as good as Ray Davies, or Pete Townshend. Brill! Our unsung hero lives.

Well, it is a long long time since I heard this song! I had this on a Cleaners from Venus cassette release, long since lost, called "Under wartime conditions". I think this may possibly be a slightly different version than I remember, but it's so long ago I'm not sure. Maybe it's just that the sound on the cassette was very muddy and this is much cleaner ... But anyway, many thanks for posting this, it was good to hear it again.
