He has an incredible voice. I just don't think the background music, or backup singers in other videos for instance allow him to convey the emotions that he can.

Clay didn't 'rush' the song. Each contestant had X amount of time to perform each song--blame the musical director if you thought this was 'rushed'. As for the show being 'fixed' due to Clay 'losing' the mistake the producers made was to not have enough phone lines or time for all of Clay's millions of votes OVER Ruben that was trying to get in. Two producers admitted 'Clay received 80 percent of the vote EVERY single week he was on.' They knew they had a phenomenon on the show. But..... The very next season each finalist was given 2-3 phone lines and double the hours for their votes to get in. In Clay's case it didn't matter if he won or not; he became much more successful than Ruben.All of Clay's performances were perfection ( no matter what Simon said---even though Simon later admitted he believed Clay was 'the best'.)

Ok, so, by popular demand, I am watching it again.How do you say "perfect"? It doesn't get any better. This is called 'A FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE!I can be very critical when it comes to music, but Clay's version of this is "WWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!

He has a nice voice both when he sings in his normal register and when he goes into falsetto, but I think he rushes the song. It was written by a man who had incarceration between him and his loved one, so he had no reason to be in such a hurry. Furthermore, Aiken's heart should be achin', almost breakin', but his voice does not convey that, IMO. He does slow down for the last part and is much more effective. Of course, on those made for TV versions of songs, time constraints force singers to either skip some of the lyrics or sing faster, so it is not his fault.

I was a huge Righteous Brothers fan. Always loved this song, which has been recorded by over fifty performers in the last sixty years. This is from 2003, when contestants sang to back-up tracks, with not much control over it. Clay Aiken recorded his own version of this song 2010(?), which is amazing. What I appreciate is that he has recorded many classics which has not been heard in years. I think we find singers who affect us with their voices, just because you don't like their singing style, doesn't mean they're not exceptional.

I never saw an episode of "American Idol" and, until I read an article about Clay Aiken's congressional candidacy in New Republic this morning, didn't know Clay Aiken from Todd Akin. I Googled this performance out of curiosity and can only say that the fact that such a bathetic display would catapult the performer to celebrity instead of being greeted with incredulous laughter says something very discouraging about human nature.

Best of the best! Still watch him sing too. This was back when the contestants sang to a backing track -- and a short part of a song. Clay blew everyone away! No band, no backup singers, no fancy lighting and stage affects -- just the performer.
