This week's tune is "The Cuckoo," a hauntingly beautiful tune that's well suited to the deep tones of the gourd banjo. It's played here out of G modal tuning (dGDCD, in this case tuned down 7 half steps to gCGFG).

A new clawhammer banjo favorite tune and tab is posted to this channel every week - click this link to subscribe and make sure you don't miss 'em: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=howtoplaybanjo

If you have any questions about this tune, the tab, or how to play clawhammer banjo in general, please post it in the comments. I'm happy to reply in text or video, if needed.

Very fine rendition of this tune, one of the best I've heard. The fretless gourd, low tuned banjo really makes a big difference too and adds a haunting element. Do people make these banjos themselves from kits or do you buy from somewhere?

Sounds great. Thanks for doing this. Can you tell me where to find the tab for the Cuckoo? I can't seem to locate it.

this is probably a silly question but I love the sound of your gourd banjo, if I used nylon strings would it have more of that sound(on my regular banjo)

I am delving through all my newly found tab :)In this tab, what does the R with a bendy symbol mean first measure of the second verse? I think it's a strum slowed to half speed but would like to research the technique of it more. Thanks!

Thanks, Pavement! And yes, I am working on some slow down video tutorials for these tunes, and this will probably make the list. If you're on the mailing list for the tune of the week, then you'll get an email when those are ready.

This is sort of brilliant I got to be honest :) Just noticed on your site it says you're planning to do video tutorials of some of these songs. Any chance 'The Cuckoo' will make the list? Really want to get that little strum bit down in the B section. Adds so much to the song I think. With love from a clawhammer noob in Ireland :)

I was just humming this tune today and trying to remember the name of it and ta-da, here it is in my email. Love this version Josh, thank you. Gonna try getting that little drop thumb lick in there. Passing along compliments on my new t-shirt, too, received at the last OT jam (which I notice you are also wearing in this vid). Our OT jam group uses your jam machine extensively to learn new songs - thank you for all your hard work.

Josh, great sound, thanks, I look forward to your song of the week and lesson each week. I'm curious, how long have you been playing, and if I might ask? Who built the gourd banjo...I've been looking around and haven't seen one that I really like. I do like the sound.

Beautifull sound and voice. Some says that the number of times you hear the cuckoo's song represents the number of years you have left to live. So please Josh, don't stop!

Hi Josh, how does one go about finding the tabs for your earlier lessons? I'd really like the tab for Cider, but sub'd after you had released and don't have the dropbox link. Many thanks :)
