Made entirely on an oscilloscope, what you see is one shot—no video effects, no video editing. Here's an explanation of how the oscilloscope works: http://adoxo.co/Phosphorfordummies

Unlike Superscope (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKYrwuxLZtY), the first video in the Phosphor series, where great care was taken to avoid the flicking that can occur while filming the oscilloscope screen, this time we took advantage of the 'rolling shutter effect' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaB9EHeDLSk) to surprising effect.

I can shed some possible observations on this type graphics. Years ago, a friend of mine and myself put together a similar system using an Arp 2600 and the X Y inputs of an oscilloscope. Filtering and other processing the audio signal allows you to simplify and control the visual effects. By splitting the output, one side can produce the graphics that other the sound. The graphics will still be triggered by the audio, but not the same as if they were directly fed by the output audio.

Is this actually the music signal fed through the scope?

Except this is faked. Especially in the last portion of the video where there are many square wave-like effects no sense of the sound is at all heard in the music. Audio and video were developed separately and independently.
