"Spelt" is a valid spelling of "spelled" but as I just commented it has been primarily used in that form in Britain (although it is seeing less use there also). As a Canadian who follows the British forms of words, "spelt" is my preferred spelling.

This gets even funnier when you realize that people from the United States also prefer "spelled" over "spelt" and that "spelt" has known far more usage in Britain/Canada.
