The original record cost Christy the guts of a quarter of million pounds in legal costs and damages - a huge amount of money in 1985. He wrote and sang a song about the Stardust Nightclub fire in Dublin in 1981 and had the audacity to mention that the fire exits were chained shut - costing 51 youngsters their lives. The courts upheld the nighclub owner's complaint. What a bent legal system we have in Ireland? This is a beautiful song about beautiful Oz though - thanks for posting.

that river is in outback Queensland actually mate ! it rarely rains. The Irish are not as lucky as legend would have people believe. Australia's hard and oppressive colonial history is all the proof you could ever need of that. Te irish were treaed as always,...abysmally by their English masters in Australia. Us natives with Irish ancestry feel that more keenly than people in the rest of he world realise...will ever realise it sees now ! Christi Moore is a real man, amongst ANY real men.

I like his voice, not sure about his adaptation of the the lyrics here and there. It should be, I won't be back till the droving or drovin's done, not ... till the drove is done. and fences roll forever, not last forever... but ... I'm just being picky coz it's one of my favourite songs, but he's Irish so I'll let him get away with it :)

This is a great song. We have loved Christy Moore since seeing him live in Grimsby. They don't come much better. Hear the reference in an intro to Ordinary Man.

Hugh McDonald wrote this song and I love Redgum's version but I'm also an Irish Music fan and Christy Moore is one of my favorites.

@camelguts don't see why not. Redgum originally wrote and sung this song in the 80's. Their finest song, one of many.
