I wonder how many 'Joe McCann's around the world were murdered because of one country's desire to rule the world? The Nazi's, for all their crimes, were only murdering innocents for a fraction of the time that 'the english empire' was.We all know the Nazi statistics but i wonder how many were murdered, the world over during glorious britannia's few hundred yrs civilizing others- 3 continents America, Africa & Australia just for starters - thats a lota, lota people. But, whew - at least the world is civil now.

All too true Nationalist Sectarianism was used to divide and rule by the Colonist across the Globe..... The nature of that Northern Ireland State, case in point maybe sort of 'Chicken and Egg' Unionist hegemony ruled that roost creating the blood letting that passed as the Troubles as Britain went to try to effect a Military solution to a Political problem of their own making...[Did not those 'Stickies' bombed Aldershot Barracks' killing five female 'Civilian' canteen staff and a Priest.]

In another incident McCann led a unit which captured 3 UVF members in Sandy Row. The UVF had raided an OIRA arms dump earlier that day and the OIRA announced they would execute the three prisoners if the weapons were not returned. McCann eventually released the three UVF members because they were "working class men like yourself". From a wiki page about Joe McCann.

I love Christy,s music, but he is such a hypocrite, just like my self. I am a Proud Irish man,and from East Belfast. We need to let it all go,the suffering and the pain, but shit sometimes i still want to put things right.

I met Joe in Limerick, trained by Alf Larkin IR 1971 (OIRA and later a top notch Provo.) in Tipp. The provo IRA were not secterian, yes they did attack the R:UC .. The RUC were unionist and prodestant with a hatred for any thing Irish....the PSNI are that much different

Agree with you mate, I was disagreeing with your man above for saying Joe was trained by the Provos. Its arguable whether you could call the pre-split IRA the same as the OIRA, that obviously depends on your political persuasion. Fair play for attending the commemoration, glad it went well. Solidarity.

Wrong. Trained by the OIRA and stayed a member until his murder. Unlike yourself, Joe understood the importance of class struggle rather than just nationalist sectarianism.

Joe was a republican, trained by Provos in Tipperary and Kerry, took the fight to the britshits and Unionist s, they respected him by shooting him when he layed mortally wounded on the street by putting 5 or 7 shots into him at close range, "I never forgot him for his humanity." Some man, RIP to all the comrades who fell in the struggle."
