There are a couple moments in the video when a certain distance is reflected in his eyes...not many songwriters have had the gift of describing what is seen as well as Chris Whitley .

the song is so smart, trapped by the urban, where most of us do live -- but he's ready to quit it. How about you? Life is perilous short.

the most influential artist ever for me, it was like they pulled him from a bear ravaged log cabin n said"hey man wel record ya"

Make sure your children and their children do not go through life without knowing this man's music.

I see this as a song about death. He has too much work going on in his mind, a restless tumult. Everything has become banal, predictable. He has a loved one still anchoring him in this world. He wants to let it all go, run back to the spiritual wilderness. And I suppose he did about 7 years after this song.

thanks for posting 3 videos from Dirt Floor. I've spent years waiting for them. yes it's Trixie looking at her father making art/music on a dangerous place. the right screenplay to describe a situation that leads to death. I was waiting for buying the "Scrapyard" videotape but never found it. I've seen on Chris website (the one when he was still alive) some still pictures from another cheap video made during the Dirt floor era : he was playing banjo, had the same hairstyle. Ballpeen hammer ???
