dawnpatrol700 - I concur. Cetera's ballads were the worst sort of success they could have. Had Kath lived, I suspect he, Lamm & Jimmy could have kept them on track. I don't mind 1 or 2 ballads on an album, but not practically the whole damn album. However, Stone of Sisyphus was an attempt to return to an earlier sound, as is XXXVI

Band members at odds during this one, some wanting to streamline, limit the horns (one of their most horn-less recordings, for sure), as an influence of the 80s punk and new-wave scene. This is their days adrift with little grounds for success, but not to worry, for all the greats have their durum days--16, 17, 18 just around the corner and back at it.

This certainly wasn't their best album, but it was still worthy. It wasn't until the real syrupy ballads started to overtake the entire albums, that they went from my favorite band, to a band I despised. They lost me entirely in 1982 with Chicago 16. It was a big hit for them, but I HATED IT. The only thing I could stand on the entire album was a one minute song called Getaway, but to get to that, you had to suffer through the Air Supply drivel of "hard to say I'm Sorry" YEESSHHHH. In the early days, they could do no wrong, even the ballads were top notch. Chicago 7's Hanky Panky / Lifesaver is an example of the Chicago I like. Hard Habit To break is an example of the Chicago I despise. They won me back with their jazz album in 94, and with Jolly Old St NIck from their xmas album. That version was SOOOO punk, I couldn't believe it was Chicago

Robert G.

As Jimmy Pankow said, after their previous albums had all gone platinum or gold, this one went plywood.

Let's be honest folks: Despite a few bright spots, 14 was the worst Chicago album ever. Manipulation is probably the best track on the record. Robert somehow steered the ship through this rough period (post-Kath) until they found renewed success with 16 and 17 and beyond.

Love Chris Pinnick's guitar solo over the last minute of the song. Underrated indeed.
