A great song from the album Chicago 17 (1984), composed by the band's trumpeter, James Pankow. This is the last song recorded by Peter Cetera with the group Chicago, before leave the group and eventually start his amazing solo career. Once in a Lifetime is played by Bill Champlin almost entirely. Bill was a pillar important to the new start for Chicago in the early 80's, thanks to him as a keyboardist and composer, and David Foster as producer, the group lived a wonderful experience musically. Sadly, Peter left the band in 1985, while Bill left the band in 2009. God bless them all.

Not many people know this little fact. Peter Cetera was supposed to sing lead on this. But, it was rumored, he said something to the effect of... This is the last album I'm making with you guys. You sing it. I'm done here.

James Pankow said in an interview, at least as of 2004-06 era when the interview was made, that the band had not ever performed Once In A Lifetime in a concert.

Seriously underappreciated song from Chicago 17. It seems jazzy like their older songs just with some 80s production.

Bill's son just performed on 'The Voice' and got three judges to turn. Looks like he is going on to continue the great Champlin name.

I TOTALLY agree, THE BEST ever since Terry & Peter. It was a very successful marriage of vocal talent!

I know which album it was on. I wondered if they RELEASED it! Most songs on an album are never released.

Cetera and Champlin always sounded great together. They are both great singers, and I love the contrast in their voices.

This is actually my favorite Chicago song. I am surprised that it is not one of their more popular songs.

this track made a great finale for 17. From the thundering intro drums of Stay the Night to the mid tempo drum intro of Once In a Lifetime to conclude it.

Such an underappreciated song. I didn't know it existed until I got the Chicago 17 CD back in 1998 in high school. It's got that jazzy pop sound, just like a slightly more 80sified version of their older stuff.
