In 1977 I met Chet. I was a 19 year old student at U of Tampa. I was away over a weekend and when I came back to campus on Monday I saw signs up saying Chet was playing there in a few weeks. Being a relatively serious guitar player at the time I immediately went to get a ticket. Sold out already. Crap! He was an idol of mine. I had spent countless hours with his records trying to figure them out. Oh well, I just forgot about it. A few weeks later I was practicing my guitar in the big practice room at the back of the Auditorium. I hear the door open behind me and in walks some guy with a briefcase...and then in walks Chet Atkins carrying guitars. I froze. I had completely forgotten he was playing that night. I was stunned. His associate walked over and very politely said, "I'm sorry but Mr. Atkins needs this room to get ready for his show tonight." I said, "Umm sure, no problem, I'll go next door." Chet walks over and says, "This young man was here first and besides, he's practicing. We'll find another room." I said, "No please, take this room, the others are tiny." He asked me if I was coming to the show that night and I told him I had tried to get a ticket but it was sold out. He said to his associate, "We must be able to get him in somehow." His friend (probably his manager) went into his briefcase and handed me two SRO (Standing Room Only) tickets. That night he searched me out and gave me a nod. What a guy!
