OMG. Everything about this song is false. When Elias Boudinott and Mr. Ridge (Cherokee men) married White women in the early 1800s, the Cherokee Nation voted to amend our constitution so that the children of White mothers would have as much citizenship rights as any children born to Cherokee mothers. "Half-breed" is an offensive racial slur. Cher herself announced on Twitter a few days ago that she is retiring this song after being confronted by actual Native women about the insensitive content. However, the offensiveness does not end with the lyrics. Cher's costume is offensive with the dyed turkey feather head-dress. Only Chiefs were allowed to wear any head-dress. They are signs of honor. Each feather held a special meaning for a particular act the man did on behalf of his people. Feathers would not be from turkeys. Eagle feathers were harvested under great ceremony. Eagles are sacred animals. The care of eagle feathers requires special knowledge. Not only were the feathers significant, but each color of any beadwork or dye had a special sacred meaning. The head-dress would be used in sacred ceremonies repeatedly. There is no federal government symbol or church icon that can really compare. Think of a cross between an American Medal of Honor and a very old crucifix with an astonishing sacred history attached to it.So, the whole effect is a doubling down on racism and insensitivity on top of insensitivity towards indigenous people; Cherokee citizens and Tribal Nations whose leaders wore head-dresses in particular...because Cherokee Principle Chiefs NEVER wore eagle-feather head-dress *facepalm! What is even more saddening is that whoever posted this and most people watching mean no harm towards Natives. We know this, but something else is also true- good intentions do not excuse real harm. Inaccurate, distasteful, and insensitive portrayals of Natives harms indigenous children when these portrayals are popularized and disseminated. Our kids are confronted with this type of stereotypical imagery and it causes psychological damage and undue stress. The APA warns that these stereotypes hurt Natives and urges an end to the use of them.

It pisses me off so much when I see so many white and black people here trying to say that they're half Cherokee or whatever. It's bullshit. You most likely have 0 in you.

If you don't see the Indian in her you're blind. All you got to do is look at her skin tone and you'll know.
