This photo was taken at the 3 Deuces nightclub (recognizable by the distinct button-tufted walls) on 52nd Street in NYC, late 1947. Miles on trumpet, Tommy Potter is seen on bass.. At the time Bird's other associates in the recording studio were Duke Jordan on piano (I imagine that's the back of his head we see here) and Max Roach on drums. Bird's legendary Dial sessions were recorded during this period.

Herbie Williams, not Miles? It sure sounds like early, getting-it-together Miles...When the early Bop-ers were looking for material to record (with no money to pay for the rights to standard tunes), Dizzy Gillespie (or somebody) found out that it was impossible to copyright chord changes without the attendant melody, so they took pop tunes and wrote new heads to them."Groovin' High" is a new melody written to the chord changes of "Whispering."(Another example would be "Donna Lee," written to the changes of "Back Home Again In Indiana.")Bird is effortlessly supernatural here, as he always is.
