Fuck where you're from. Fuck where you're going. It's all about where you're at.

Does anyone know who originated the repeated three-note riff that opens and closes this version -- it was not in the original "pop" versions. It seems to have become a standard part of all the jazz renditions of the song. Thanks.

This song literally brought me, a grown man, to tears. Like for real, this is the most beautiful love song I’ve ever heard and there is not a single lyric.

The other two takes from the Dial session can be found by searching on "Bird of Paradise". You can also find this song in the "Bird of Paradise" guise by searching under "Prince Albert" (e.g. Blakey and the Messengers Live at Cafe Bohemia) m- same intro and tail end as in BOP and they still maintain a connection to ATTYA.

It's actually the first take of "Bird of Paradise" which is basically a very straight (but decorated) version of "All the Things you Are". There are also two more (later) takes from this session, which show a wonderful transition, first to something which sounds definitely like ATTYA, but is not at all that song played straight. The last of these three takes is a whole nother world, but still has the "feel" of the original. They were released on Dial and (I think) recorded on the West Coast, not NYC. These three takes give insight into the wonderful workings of Parker's genius.
