This is one of the coolest recordings of swing ever, for me at least. It's swing right? But what's this? Listen to the bop riff at 2:30... Trumpet player didn't even know it was bop and yet he's doing it i.e., this was recorded in 41 - bop wasn't even a thing yet. This is one of the best examples of bop before it was. Love the progression of jazz through the 40s.

I love the way Cootie Williams finds that he has kind of backed himself into a musical corner and then works his way out of it! Choice!

This little riff was later given the title "A Smoooth One",and was recorded by several artists including the great Red Garland.

COTTIE WILLIAMS SOUNDS GREAT AND I SEE WHY DAVE TOUGH WAS HELD IN SUCH HIGH ESTEEM. OF COURSE CHARLIE IS SUPERB.

They were just hanging out, waiting for Benny. Charlie is noodling, warming up. Then he changes keys, plays a new riff, drums pick it up, Cootie chimes in, then the piano. By 3 minutes or so, we've got a new tune with a pretty set arrangement. Later recorded by Goodman as A Smooth One at a slower tempo. As always, the "composer" was Benny Goodman (royalties). Why I love this track--it's spontaneous collective creation--first a little riff, then it's expansion into a tune.
