The only real reason shoegaze is good and different is because the vocals are low in the mix and used as a droning instrument to complement the strong rhythmic sounds of the backing music, rather than "fronting" the songs; the guitars and synths took over that role. That was unique for its time and it also produced a sort of hypnotizing relaxation when you listened to it for extended periods. It was also a reaction to over-the-top pop and rock stars that made laughable attempts at self-absorbed self-importance, namely singers. We used to call this (shoegaze and dream pop) KROQ music once, that is until KROQ totally destroyed its credibility in the mid 90's and largely ignored what made them great to begin with.
