Nothing wrong with the recording AT ALL. When you do a remake it's important for artists to re-think the material. Who needs another carbon copy of the original arrangement? I think they created something new & exciting AND ahead of its time with this version.

The effects were part of the very creative process she & the late great producer (of most of her albums) Arif Mardin go into. Well, on the "I Feel For You" album, I think it was more of Mardin going for & reaching some kind of artistic height. For the 1st time, he included other producers & mixers/DJs to make the record which I think, though given the Grammy-nod is still & unappreciated masterpiece, some of it ahead of its time. Check out what Khan & Mardin did on the "Chaka Khan" album too!

wow all the things people are complaining about are my favorite parts and have been since it was released--the vocal treatment was so ahead of it's time it could be used today, some of the mixing breaks too could be used today--esp. that "cut up" effect (around the 2:00 min), and I think if it stayed true to the original the song would be unremarkable today. The drum machine is classic 808 work, perfect.

It's almost a crime for the producers to have done all the effects on her voice but that would totally work for today even though she doesn't HAVE to have it like the ones we laughingly call 'vocalists' today.

I figured the Warner Bros. were the culprits. Chaka wasn't crazy about the 'Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan...' rap thing going on in "I Feel For You" either but I guess that worked out for her in spite of that.

@goladen Strangely I agree!!! The vocals for what they are truly amazing, but whats wrong with this song is It didn't stay true to the original. If it had the same tempo, beat & guitar riffs Chaka would have created a new classic!!! But don't blame Chaka, blame Warner Bros for pressuring her to make a commercial pop album. She even watered down Stronger Than Before another song on this album which Joyce Kennedy did it the way she should have & tore it up!!! SMH!!!
