This version was my introduction to this great song. (I'm playing it with a singer on a gig tonight and wanted to study it more.) I've played it so many times with singers on jam sessions but never really looked at it from the student perspective. I did get to hear Etta Jones sing it many times back in the 80's, as I was a fan of her's and Houston Person in when they used to do the weekend brunch gig at The Blue Note. (Cecil Brooks, her drummer, was trying to get me in the band!) I love the fact that Chaka and her pianist (sounds like Joe Sample to me) retained Richard Wyands piano introduction from the 1960 recording that Etta had a hit with, (which is quite brilliant by the way!) and even put it on the ending. A classic interpretation wrapping the old up with the new!

Sounds like the studio version from the 'Rufus' album? One of the several tracks on that album that led me to appreciate Ms Khan.

Was just saying how this is my #1, all-time favorite, Chaka Khan song. I love this ... this is the best rendition and arrangement of this song I have ever heard and it has been done by many ...

Chaka has been one of my favorites since the very first time I heard her voice on "Once You Get Started" by her with Rufus...her diversity is truly amazing, pop, soul, jazz...she has the gift to convey emotion with her expressive vocal talents like no other...

Chaka Khan has always been a great singer but she has never been one of my favorites because her music never appealed to me. However, if she is going to sing more songs like this one -- her wonderful voice will be joining the likes of Billie Holiday and Madeleine Peryoux in my music room. This is quite impressive. Damn good too.

She also does a killer version of My Funny Valentine, produced by Babyface for the "Waiting to Exhale" soundtrack...If you don't know it, you should look it up. You will flip for her on this one!
