The whole album is good, but the lyrics "And I don't believe it's the way you were raised, or the cards you were dealt, or a poor self image, I think you love yourself too much...you wanna rule some sovereign state? You wanna smother in all that hate!" really hit me like a fist. Alot of people blame their parents, or fate, or a negative self-image for their unhappiness, but Steve Taylor flips it around and says you love yourself too much! 2 Tim 3:2 says in the end times "people will be lovers of themselves" more than lovers of God. Jesus taught that Christians should die to self to find true happinesss.

I think it's got more to do with ST's smouldering career at that time, he's probably addressing himself. Or at least the "self-righteous babble" of the CCM industry, who had been "blinded by their own light". For example I remember poor Amy Grant couldn't even get a divorce without seeing her records disappear from the shelves of the CCM stores. It's also telling that CG's album was released on RCA and not Word (or whoever). And the album took a less holier than thou stance than his solo stuff.

Bandleader and founder? Hey, I dig Steve Taylor as much as the next guy, but, Chagall Guevera was a BAND...

You said it well. They (the band) should have been Alt-stars...

Just to remind and upset... This was a BAND, not just a ST solo project. They all offered alot and added to the mix. Bad timing for the real world, no record company support (what's new?), and general confusion as to what kind of band they actually where...sad, indeed...

Right now, the background is "Gangam Style", by PSY. I feel there's some synergy there between the two songs.

That line is perfect with today's secular music--"I think you love yourself too much..." Well said Steve.

I posted this song on here a LONG time ago, after band lead and founder Steve Taylor said that he didnt mind people downloading his music. I had since gotten a notice from the record company "allowing" me to leave the video up. How nice of them! (sarcasm)

Trying to fill up my ipod with all these great old songs I almost forgot about. Saw Steve Taylor at Creation in 1995, great show. Now got to look for Dave Perkins.
