"Adelaide" Lyrics:

He fell in love with a reservation girl

During the time of the sugar beet harvest

They moved out west to the coast where he built her a bed

Made of shagbark from Sherwood Forest

And life was good until she told him goodbye

Said they was better off living separate lives

And maybe they was

Well should we stop and take her with us

Should we stop and take her with us

Should we stop and take her with us

For all our time

We left Worcester with our boots and our bags

And America undressed herself in front of our eyes

My sister told me

My sister told me

That there's gangs in the hills

When the hickory falls

And you never know when you're gonna run from it all

Like she did

Should we stop and take her with us

Should we stop and take her with us

Should we stop and take her with us

For all our time

Adelaide you know you're just no good for me

You know it's just so hard to see that you were right

Adelaide you know you're just no good for me

You know it's just so hard to see that you were right

You were right

She was dangling her legs over the little Colorado River

Catching the last bit of sunlight in all of Arizona

Told me

Arizona told me

So I asked her if she wanted to fly

If maybe she needed a ride

Anywhere at all

Should we stop and take her with us

Should we stop and take her with us

Should we stop and take her with us

For all our time

Adelaide you know you're just no good for me

You know it's just so hard to see that you were right

Oh that you were right

Oh Willy, I wish that you could love me less

Oh Willy, I wish that you could love me less

I tried he said underneath his breath

I've tried

Oh Willy, I wish that you could love me less

Oh Willy, I wish that you could love me less

I tried he said underneath his breath

I've tried

Adelaide you know you're just no good for me

You know it's just so hard to see that

You were right

Adelaide you know you're just no good for me

You know it's just so hard to see that

You were right

Oh you were right

Though it will never be recognized as such in the future, and though it is not old enough to have been recognized so far, this ought to be known as one of the great American road songs.

alright I was really stoned when I wrote that, but all the chords are right, jut not in the right spot sometimes

chords are mostly A D E kinda blues style "should we stop and..." is D A repeated ; leading chord is Bm chorus: Adelaide! - A ... D C#m Bm Just No Good (match the chords to the words) For (F#m) me you know its Just So Hard (match with the same chords as before) to (E) see that you were (A) right (the second time the last A is changed to a D) the quiet bit near 2:15 is A F#m D A if she wannted to fly E C#m A theres a start the next bit is repetitive find the chord that fits

Shifting perspectives make this a very dream-like song. It is an examination of the feelings that hurt and the desire to fly from them and the indecision at the heart of this. It evokes a sort of timeless Americana and the footloose ethos that is the forgotten aspect of the American dream. Fly, Chadwick, fly.
