Song: Visions of Mortality

Band: Celtic Frost

Album: Morbid Tales

Year: 1984

~ Lyrics:

My life turns into sand

Immortality is my dream

Man shall follow my command

Sorcery shall conquer my fear

Astral magic and runic wand

I feel that wisdom's near

Across the mountain's ice

Scarlett at the equinox' dawn

I sacrificed an innocent lamb

And drunk the wine of paradise

But, still run the sands of time

Just one thing yet to be done

As spells surround me

At a lightmass' night

He raised the abyss

Covered by the sword

I sold my soul in vain

I feel it, as he returns

The sands of time will never run

For an immortal dead man!

NWOBHM bands Thrash bands Black Metal bands Speed bands Death and even Punk bands were influenced by Motorhead. They influenced the very bands that became really influential themselves in shaping extreme music. I wouldn't say Venom was better being that their approaches were different. Being faster heavier and more skilled doesn't make a band better.

Pretty much every thrash metal band was influenced by Motorhead but that doesn't mean that they can't be better than Motorhead. Venom was influenced by Motorhead, but they to were also better. Put it this way... For one specific song (Ace of Spades) Motorhead played their riffs really fast which inspired thrash metal to take shape, and thrash metal itself eventually went beyond those riffs.

What makes this band surpass motorhead? As much as I love Celtic Frost I have to say that they wasn't more influential than Motorhead. Celtic Frost uses the very Drum Beats that Motorhead came up with. The musical contex is not too comparable. As for the musical attitude, it mostly came from being influenced by Discharge another band influenced by Motorhead but on the Punk side. If I was you I'd listen to Discharge I'd start with "See nothing Hear Nothing Say Nothing"

Can't a son surpass his father's achievements? Or student become the master? No one makes art in a vacuum so who came first and who influenced who is only relevant to history and understanding the context around the work but not the judgement of the works relative to one another. They're both great bands which is all that really matters but if we are to have a metal band death match as we fans often do, Celtic Frost, in this particular bout, is the fighter I'm backing..

Motorhead influenced Celtic Frost though

Agreed. I mean, I love Motorhead and all - they're like the Ramones of metal, good 'o Motorhead but Celtic Frost was defining a genre and breaking boundaries. Motorhead is great shitkicking metal. Celtic Frost took things to another level.

@dieselroarmt875 It probably is, if you pick up the special edition of Panzerfaust with commentary by Fenriz on it you'll find out just how much they love Celtic Frost.
