The late Derek MacCormack singing Cavan Girl.

As I walk the road from Killeshandra, weary I sit down

For it's twelve long miles around the lake to get to Cavan town

'Though Oughter and the road I go, one scene beyond compare

How I curse the time it takes to reach my Cavan girl so fair.

The autumn shades are on the leaves, the trees will soon be bare

Each red coat leaf around me seems the colour of her hair

My gaze retreats, defies my feet and once again I sigh

Of a broken pool of sky reminds the colour of her eyes.

At the Cavan cross each Sunday morning it's there she can be found

And she seems to have the eye of every boy in Cavan town

If my luck will hold I'll have the golden summer of her smile

And to break the hearts of Cavan men she'll talk to me a while

So next Sunday evening finds me homeward to Killeshandra bound

To work a week till I return to court in Cavan town

When asked if she would be my wife, at least she'd not said no

So next Sunday morning rouse myself and back to her I go.

Under the blessing of every god of this world, Cavan still belongs to Ireland.

Water water everywhere It raining Ireland over 200 days a year and they want to charge us for water. If someone had told this to our ancestors they would be falling all over the place laughing We have enough water in Cavan to keep half the planet supplied Opps maybe I should not mention that or half the tossers in the Dail will be up there buying it up

I knew a song by Barleycorn, Men Behind the Wire, from when I was in high school. I played cribbage with my friends's mom, who was an Irish lady. She would not let me go until I paid a quarter for my loss, double for skunks, and she'd play this group over and over. Now, 40 years later, I thought of them. Finding them on the internet, and now coming to youtube, I'm fortunate to hear such beautiful music that they made. Derek does have an incredible voice. I'm sad I never had a chance to see him in my life. Graduating in 74 from high school, I guess it could have been possible. But my music then was probably like most kids - disco or whatever. Now, today, music like this is a treasure. Interesting - my chinese fortune cookie at lunch yesterday said I would discover hidden treasure! Seriously. Maybe this was it.

Cavan Girl was written by the songwriter Thom Moore, who founded the bands Pupkinhead and Midnight Well. Thom has written many more well respected and favored songs.

Just want to thank all the people who stuck up for me regarding my post here! You people are the reason I keep going back every year!! My parents emigrated from Leitrim and Roscommon back in the late 20's. My father died when he was only 45 years old and my mother raised her 4 children with a true love of her heritage for which we are grateful. I have done the same with my children. As they say "there is good and bad in every culture. I love Ireland as much as I love America!

i only found derek mccormack through this song. definitely one of the most underrated of irish singers. he has a purity to his voice that is not common amongst irish balladeers. very like paul brady in that respect. may he rest in peace.
