First off , get the title correct . He and Carrie are homeless because they are alcoholics .

NOT ABOUT THE HOMELESS.This song by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show (written by Shel Silverstein) talks about how man depends on woman. The man in this song looks exhausted and perhaps given up all hopes about any future. It is woman who would give any hope for him to cling onto life so that he will feel alive. The line 'if I can lean onto you' clearly displays the dependent nature of man especially when fallen to the ground. Dr. Hook's approach to this song is fabulous is different from that of 'The Cover of the Rolling Stone' or even from 'Sylvia's Mother'. My doubt is whether the present seductive womanhood in a highly commercialized context can save us from the human catastrophe that we are now facing. Will she save us or will she traumatize us more and more?

Seems to me that Carrie was the one ignoring the homeless guy, but maybe I misheard it. Thanks for the post.

Homelessness is one of those things until you been there and live the life you can't understand the story behind the song.

This song came out long before the press talked about "the homeless" and "homelessness." They were still called "bums" and "hobos."
