This is the full performance of Dancing In The Street on the 'Your All American College Show' by the Carpenters in 1968.

Hear Richard confirming that no, it is not an organ 'It's an electric piano'... and check out that awesome drum work by 18 year old Karen...

And if that isn't enough for ya... you get to see the trio (yes, the Dick Carpenter Trio, to be exact) win the top trophy and prize money handed out by none other than Zsa Zsa Gabor, and William Shatner!!

This was the performance that caused Mr. John Wayne to think that Karen would be perfect for the female lead in his upcoming film 'True Grit'. Karen did read for the part but was beaten out by popular Kim Darby for the role.

*poor quality* To see a much better quality, but incomplete video of the same, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PAy6Ab3CcQ

Hey, that was Art Linkletter in there, too, handing out the check at the end. You guys are way too young.

From a sympathetic point of view, I'd let her stay chained up to those drums and let them play high school dances till they burn out. The business side says front her, and let her talent make them superstars, and that's what sombody decided....and it probably killed Karen Carpenter.

He threw some "Shadow Of Your Smile" in there. You go, Dick!

it's fascinating to hear this , she is 18 and singing in high octave. compare this the first hit "close to you" where she sings in her lower voice, which we all have grown to love.

Ha ha. They were broke at that time so they needed that money. I really like early Carpenters stuff before they figured out how to make hit ballads.
