Crescent Noon

(Words and music by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis)

Green September

burned to October brown,

Bare November

led to December's frozen ground.

The seasons stumbled 'round

Our drifting lives are bound

to a falling crescent noon.

Feather clouds cry

a vale of tears to earth,

Morning breaks and

no one hears a quiet mountain bird

Dressed in a brand new day

the sun is on its way

to a falling crescent noon.

Somewhere

in a fairy-tale forest

lies one

answer that is waiting to be heard.

You and I were

born like the breaking day,

All our seasons

All our green Septembers

burn away.

Slowly we fade into

a sea of midnight blue

and a falling crescent noon.

Karen's Best.

This song is an underrated gem...possibly the most beautifully sung and arranged song that they ever made together. Karen was at her vocal peak at this point of her career.

I was 16 when CLOSE TO YOU was released and I immediately loved the album but this song haunted me from the first time I heard it...nothing like it had ever been done by a pop singer and it was dark and mysterious. I would listen to it over and over and try to store the mood in a private place in my soul so that I could keep a little piece of Karen to myself. I worked in NYC in 83 in a store where Karen had a personal house charge account, as did her psychiatrist, who lived in the neighborhood.. When news of Karen's passing appeared, one of my coworkers, a rude and insolent young boy, walked over to the rolodex, found Karen's charge card, took it out, cut it in two and said, "Well, we dont need THIS anymore." Karen Carpenter has one of the best voices and gives some of the best performances and interpretations of music that I have heard since I started listening to the Beach Boys in 62.

This song is probably the most beautiful Carpenters song and possibly one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I wish Karen had more songs in which she sang in her natural lower register because it is just BEAUTIFUL. This track is everything.

Only 24,060 views? Pathetic. This song deserves so much more.

Thanks Ned for posting this; it is my all-time favorite Carpenters song because of the purity and clarity of Karen's vocals, Richard's excellent arranging and backing vocals, and their very effective use of overdubbing. It gives me goosebumps as well as puts me into a very serene and relaxed state whenever I hear it!

Once again Mr. Nickerson your combination of the Carpenters music and sublime images evokes hope for the eternal. The current life doesn't offer much hope, I'm afraid. God bless you and your vision.

Apollo Brown sampled this one for his new "The Answer". It's genuinely one of the best beats I've heard in a very long time.

Isn't that what it's supposed to be? Cultures & races seem to have differences, and to some degree, that's true. But there is a unifying force the unites all humanity (I call it the Biblical God/Jesus), and the next closest step is through music. We all, as human beings, want the same things. I think music is able, in some instances, to bridge the the gap on a spiritual level to unite all people, as much as is earthly (in this shell we call our body) possible.

Ned: Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us! As others have said, you were able to match many beautiful images with the flow of this song perfectly! I have loved the Carpenters since I was a teen in the early 70s. In my humble opinion, this was one of Richard's best songs, but did not get the airplay his many other classics did. Great job!
