A commenter stated that Karen was a soprano. Not true. Karen was a contralto, which is the lowest female tessitura. Tessitura is an Italian word that means the voices placement- where it is the richest. If you have very high notes but musically they are weak, you don't sing in that register. I am a tenor and can sing alto choral lines, but that doesn't make me an alto.

I don't know what's in this song but everytime I hear it I feel sentimental and my eyes get misty. Maybe because I loved the carpenters and I miss Karen very much.

The only thing wrong with this song, besides the background singers, is the intro. So much better if it starts with…..Because we are in love.

In this song, she sings about going to her "mom" for advice. That's a farce. Her mother was so mean and hurt her daughter so bad, it makes me mad. Her mother was a real witch, but her "husband" was a "dirtbag and goldigger". After reading the book about the life of Karen Carpenter, there is so much in it, it shows what kind of people her mother and husband were really like. R.I.P. Karen, we will be close to you one day.

Thanks for inviting me to your community, "Love & Friendship Forever." What came to mind right away was a lyric from the 1980 song "Because We Are In Love" that John Bettis and Richard Carpenter wrote for Karen Carpenter's wedding. And it seems appropriate for this community: "The more love grows, the more it stays the same." Carpenters - Because We Are In Love

This song was really written for her wedding? I didn't know that. I'm sobbing my eyes out cuz its so beautiful. Now that I know it was written for her marriage that ended in disappointment and divorce, makes it that much sadder and tearjerking.

There's a line in a Carpenters' song ("Ordinary Fool"): "How many times, have I mistaken, good looks and laughs for bad news, and how many times, have I mistaken, good looks and laughs for the blues..." That line is so true about the guy Karen married.

I don't see anything bad in what everyone said "saccharine-sweet". And I don't think Carpenters should have been critisized for that. They should critisize musicians who sing of sex, drugs, shallowness, crimes, death etc.. Carpenters songs always bring me to life!

So... we fans lose. But what do they gain?

I hardly think this song falls in the category of "corny"----it is a lovely song sung by a beautiful woman in love.

There was a complete video of Karen's wedding several years ago on Youtube, but evidently the copyrighters got hold of it and eliminated it. So sad..... Karen was a gorgeous bride.

I completely agree, Rudolf!

This is a completely lovely song, and so bittersweet, because Karen's dreams of love forever were not to be realized. It was the biggest disappointment of her life, and I truly think it really started the downward spiral to her life's end. Rest in peace, Karen; we love you so much still.

Beautifully sung....I remember reading that she was planning to sing this LIVE to her husband, and at the ceremony, before she arrived to the crowded hall...her voice boomed out, and the guests kept turning around looking for her, but it was just a recording, of which she had recorded it the day before....
