It's not hard to reach back to the day

underneath an Iowa sun

Running to the tower of Waterloo, looking

for the Sullivan train to come

His five boys would run to the top

and salute him as he went by

First we'd wave hello

Then we'd wave goodbye

It's not hard to reach back to the days

after the attack on Pearl

Overnight my buddies turned into me,

running out of time for games and girls

The Sullivan boys were not overlooked

uncle Sam calling each by name

The very next day they left on a mystery train

Say goodbye, Mrs. Sullivan

Don't you cry

"We regret to inform you

the Navy is taking your sons away"

All five

so put your blue star in the window

It's not hard to reach back to her smile,

when she received their letter

The letters, they sounded generally the same

it said: "if they couldn't be home,

at least they were together on a

mighty fighting battleship,

somewhere in the South Pacific"

The letters never got much more specific

Say goodbye, Mrs. Sullivan

And don't you cry

"We regret to inform you

the Navy is keeping you sons away"

All five

so keep your blue star in the window

It's not hard to reach back to the day

when the war finally came home

Uncle Sam he'll send you a telegram,

so he doesn't have to tell you over the phone

I heard she cracked up, when they found

out what the war had cost,

And all five of her boys were lost

Say goodbye Mrs. Sullivan

Go ahead and cry

"We regret to inform you that all your sons

have passed away"

All five

So change you blue star to gold

This is just as powerful now at 40 as it was when I was in my early to mid 20's.

Man, I remember Spine in the mid 90's when they would come through OK. They would always crash at fans's houses after the show. What a great group of guys. Went to every show they played in Stillwater and it was always a awesome time.

I listened to this performance live on WBCN Boston back in the day. Still remember it perfectly, I was sitting in my 1987 Conquest TSI, haha.

I'm proud to say I'm on the Edge Radio comp CD with this tune. Track 18. This acoustic version was played live in my club one night.

Not that kind of pride. You need to go back and re read your bible. Pride in others is most certainly not a sin. "He who humbles himself will be exalted and he who exalts himself wiull be humbled."

I heard this on the radio the night they invaded Iraq. It made me think of how tough things were going to get for a alot of people... And yeah, I got choked up.

Why is it always someone from Canada flapping their lips? Is this the attitude of the "New Canadians" You people need to learn what respect is

I am from Waterloo Iowa. What an admirable yet horrible part of our history.

Meant movie, not operation. Which by the way, was truly revolutionary in the way it was filmed. By using handheld cameras, and reducing the frame rate, if you can watch that movie and not have sweaty palms, man you must be dead.

Not to mention this is the event that triggered the "Saving Private Ryan" operation. Probably not a good idea to have them all on one boat, clearly.

They're still preforming and recording. Touring like some crazy mofo's!

Some of the lyrices are wrong. "My buddies turned into men, running out of time for games and girls."

That's pride for America you're feeling.
