II. Beltà, poi che t'assenti

Beltà, poi che t'assenti,

Come ne porti il cor, porta i tormenti.

Chè tormentato cor può ben sentire

La doglia del morire,

E un'alma senza core

Non può sentir dolore.

Well, it's been 24 years, and I only heard the story second-hand anyway. I wasn't in his class, though I did sing in his early music group and knew the professor. It's probably true, though I just don't have the lurid details beyond what I posted! Could have been this madrigal that caused the "illness," perhaps! lol

Quite an interesting composer, even if he did have some nasty habits (like murdering people). When I was studying music at St. Olaf College, there was this anecdote circulating about one of the early music professors, to the effect that he had been preparing for a lecture, and listening to several of the weirder Gesualdo madrigals, and had felt a sudden rising in his abdominal region and had to visit the bathroom... Just might be true, but I find this style strangely calming at times.

great. Gesualdo transcended renaissance music.

@amatorynumber check Mille Volte Il Di, that madrigals is INSANE, no really it makes schoenberg look small. Also, a lot of people think that Moro Lasso is a difficult piece when really it's the most diatonic Madrigal from all the collection (sesto libro). People get misleaded by the opening two chords of the begining ;)

The singing is so good.
