He says he tunes one string higher instead of having one lower compared to 4-string bass, besides he sounds like a guitar player because he learnt how to play flamenco, and plays mandolin and lute, and you add he uses a pick and alternates with finger playing. quite an accurate and interesting description of his playing indeed.
