Excellent - this song is as old as dirt. Good stuff.

W.C. Handy wrote this in 1921. The original title was "Loveless Love." Later in the early 1950's, this song became the inspiration for Robert Lowell's iconic poem "Skunk Hour," which he dedicated to his close friend, Elizabeth Bishop. Make sure and check out Bessie Smith's version from 1925, as well!

The song is mentioned in the Stephen King book Wizard and Glass. I'm glad you responded to my comment from two years ago - I'd forgotten this song and how much I like it...

There are, they just don't stand out due to today's media and the many ways we now have to express one self

i love these old blues, so simple yet complex! theres no replacing such a beautiful art form, sadly, real music has disappeared in this western society i live in :/ i just wish there was more soulfull individulas producing music like this.

@ColKurtzCobain This song probably even predates Lonnie Johnson's version...

If I close my eyes I can just see the life this man must have lead; full of misery and heartbreak. Amazing that he is still able to create such a beautiful song!!

Thanks for this one. I've got the tab (from an old Stefan Grossman's book) since many years ago, but not the audio, and you know NO WAY I would ever try to learn a blues tune just with the transcription... XD
