Lyrics

Please tell me how to think

Please tell me what to say

Please tell me what to do

Please tell me how I should behave

Please tell me what to sing

Please tell me what to play

Please tell me how to act

Please tell me the rules of your game

Please tell me who I should be

Please tell me what to do

Please tell me how to please

I really want to be like you

Really done it now, sold out

But to who, what, when, where and how,

Yeah, really done it now, sold out,

I've taken my cut

And corporate rock really sucks

Don't try and tell me how to think

Don't tell me what to say

Don't tell me what to do

Don't try and tell me how to behave

Don't tell me how to sing

Don't tell me how I should play

Don't tell me how to act

I don't want to play to your game

Don't tell me who I should be

Don't tell me what to do

Its myself I'm trying to please,

Don't anyone, least of all, you.

Really done it now, sold out

But to who, what, when, where and how

Yeah, really done it now, sold out

I've taken my cut

[lead]

Yeah, really done it now, sold out

But to who, what, when, where and how,

Yeah, really done it now, sold out

I've taken my cut

Yeah, really done it now, sold out,

But to who, what, when, where and how,

Yeah, really done it now, sold out

I've taken my cut

And corporate rock really does suck

I think they are referring to bands that choose to play whatever is "popular". Money talks.

not sure if they ever sold out but their conceit led them down a path of having less and less of the elements that made them beloved in the first place. In interviews, Bill and Jeff in particular say lots to distance themselves from being categorized as metal. Many metal artists do this, they call it maturing as if metal is only for little kids.

I think some of you guys are misunderstanding. The song is well, obviously about telling producers, sound engineers and many others that they are not interested in sounding like everything else, they're not interested in knowing how (like the lyrics say) they SHOULD play, how they SHOULD act, what they SHOULD do etc, and the chorus is really just sarcastic, implying they're "sellouts" even though that's not the case at all. They don't want to be corporate rock, they want to be Carcass..

If you're a communist, go bark up another tree. What happened to Carcass, they got BETTER, that's what happened. That early stuff was crap for the most part. And how much money do you think Carcass ever made to make them sell outs? Did they become Metallica, uh NO! It's obvious you're not a musician

If a band charges money for anything your band does (Concerts, merch, CD's etc) you are a sell out to some degree. The bands that say they will never sell out are the ones couldn't even if they wanted to because no one is buying. I have no problem with bands making money, the more the better but if they change their style to appease a certain demographic, then I won't buy their stuff. I did this way back in 1991 when Metallica released the Black album. I few months later, I discovered CARCASS

I don't think making a few bucks doing what you love is selling out. To me selling out is turning over your art to anyone who is willing to do as they please with it in the name of corporate gain.

yeah if you're born in a real life musical oppurtunity land you can afford that luxury, if not you'll just have to play stuff you don't like to survive
