Reminds me of Primus in a way. Minus the bass guitar of course.

Here's a tip for those who don't "get" this:Listen to one part: the first guitar, the second guitar, the bass, the drums.Just listen to that. When you've listened to that and gotten that it works like a regular song, understand that the other parts work in an odd sort of synch with it, it goes in and out. This isn't chorus, bridge, refrain shit like you've heard in every single song since 1900 here, yet it's closer than you'd think. It plays off that.Again, just listen to one part. Like the bass or the drums at first.I don't get people who just utterly dismiss this, there's something great here but it's like you're all doped up by public education or something to even try to get it.

Is this one of those albums that sounds like so much shit that it almost ends up being good? I certainly don't understand it.Kudos to people who genuinely like this music...but I have to say, I think a lot of people say that they like it just for the sake of sounding "smart" and "sophisticated"

Warner Brothers had a cheeky way of introducing talent. They'd print an order form for sampler albums on the dust cover of more popular albums. You could order double albums for $4 with "new" groups like Jethro Tull, Faces (with Rod Stewart), Neil Young, James Taylor all on this one record. My favorite of these samplers was called The Big Ball. Side 4 was reserved for the weird bands: The GTOs, The Mothers, Wild Man Fisher, Grateful Dead and Ella Guru by Captain Beefheart. If ANYONE has this album, could you PLEASE post it? I guarantee that the 78 'thumbs up' guys would thank you, and I'd thank you too.And yes, Riley Smith, this is as real as it gets. You shoulda been there.

Yeah, its amazing that this only took 4 hours to record. The magic band was so well rehearsed it took no time at all to finalize, because they had been rehearsing for 8 months under the "dictatorship" of Captain Beefheart.

This is not true, it was simply said for more publicity. I just feel they did a LOT of jammin, dreaming and sober... while Zappa kept an eye on him.

If you're going to go all out, you should do something like this. This is intelligence driven to the max. Driven near to the cliff.

Yeah, I sort of figured you weren't a retard, but since this is the internet, I also figured I'd better make it clear before some random user sees my comment and starts accusing me of being one. :P

You're welcome. =) (BTW, I noticed now that it looked like I said "avantgarde" is influenced by blues. Of course, I meant that Beefheart was influenced by blues and the band played avantgarde rock)

I don't know whether or not it's true, but I read somewhere that the band had to practice the songs for a year to perfect them because they would only have 4 hours to record the album.

The style is "avantgarde" or even "avantgarde rock". It's heavily influenced by blues. On the first records, they even did some classic blues songs like Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy".
