Longing for "exotic" countries under a warmer sun led to numerous "Italien Schlager" in Germany throughout the 1930s. Just think of "Eine Nacht in Monte Carlo" from the 1931 film "Bomben of Monte Carlo". That wave rolled through the loudspeakers of the medium wave radios till the "Duce" got the boot and Italy changed sides. "Italien Schlager" were banned from public broadcast and performance. Just Winkler's and Siegel's bad luck that their "Caprifischer" was released at about the time the Allies had landed on Sicily and were to take Capri soon.My father recalled they sang a parody on the Italian fascist anthem in that stage of the war: "Wir sind tapfere Italiener, unser Land wird immer kleener, Sizilien ham se uns genommen, bis nach Rom sieht man se kommen, groß das Maul und groß die Kehle, schwarz das Hemd und und schwarz die Seele." We are brave Italians, our country gets shrinking, Sicily has been taken, you see them (=allies) come to Rome, big the gob and big the throat, black the shirt and black our hearts...About a year later the bravest of them would sing parodies on other songs as well. Popular tunes to cheer people up when there was nothing left to cheer for often failed their purpose. "Es geht alles vorüber, es geht alles vorbei, auf jeden Dezember, folgt wieder ein Mai." ("Every misery will pass and be over, there is a new May coming after each December") became "Es geht alles vorüber, es geht alles vorbei, auch mit Adolf Hitler und seiner Partei". Needless to translate that.Anyway, the "Caprifischer" got buried in the archives but were soon dug out when the war was over, which made an entire generation believe that it was a "pure bred" post war tune.

Do not even mention Germany's horrors during the 30' and 40's The context of some of Max Raabe's songs are set in those eras and are indicative of an art form that pervaded a portion of German society at the time and was declared declasse. Max brings these songs and others, including American, Spanish, Italian German to our era to enjoy and understand by listening to the words themselves. He is the greatest interpreter of a song repertory of a bygone era. thanks Max.

I am neither a Holocaust denier nor a Hitler apologist. I visited Bergen Belsen in June 1945 and saw the evidence of the holocaust with my own eyes. That did not make all Germans bad and it does not do so now. What happened in German in the 1930s/40s was horrendous and must never happen again. Germany has become a fiercely democratic country with many admirable qualities. We should learn from the mistakes of the past - not constantly relive them.
