From "Chants d'Auvergne" ("Songs from the Auvergne"), a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France arranged for soprano voice and orchestra by Joseph Canteloube between 1923-1930. The songs are in the local language, Occitan.

The Auvergne region of France is a high plateau with extinct volcanoes and green, rolling hills stretching as far as the eye can see. Under summer skies, it is a land of skylarks, butterflies and lush carpets of wildflowers. This all comes across in the lilting strains of the folk song "Baïlèro," a shepherd's call in the Auvergne dialect arranged by the French composer Marie Joseph Canteloube.

One of the most beautiful voices "AND" song's, that I have ever heard. I now have a new location. As soon as I heard this song, I moved right across the river, from whence Netania, had sang this very song. Simply put, for me, this song is a life changer.(Yeah, right. I'll be your _ _ _ _ _ _!!!)

You've done such a wonderful justice to this music by both sharing it on YouTube and by providing a flattering contextual montage to go with. I'm becoming a huge fan of Davrath. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you all for your kind words. Saying goodbye to someone you love is the hardest thing anyone has to do. It was really important to show my love and commitment to the man with whom I shared my life and I couldn't think of a better way to show it than by playing this beautiful song to send him on his way. The message of being reunited is there in the words. It was and still is, very hard but I know he will cross that stream to come to me, some day.

By far the best rendition without doubt. Natasha's voice is so pure and natural. Powerful yet soft and smooth, it just seems so effortless.Never fails to rouse the emotions, beautiful.

I cannot listen to this, now, without crying my eyes out. Having loved this song for many years, it was my first choice to play it at my husband's funeral, two years ago. Everyone was weeping, including the undertaker, which shows the power of Netania's rendition, still the best. "Shepherd, the stream separates us.....Then I'll come and get you further down". (found this translation of the third verse).

I'm saddened by the loss of such a wonderful singer. Her rendition of Bailero was superb, sung with such feeling and sympathy. Magical. RIP Netania.

Beautiful, heavenly music. My husband and I saw her perform these songs in the Hollywood Bowl on a warm summer night in the early 1960's, and I was not more than 10 feet away from this singer. A simple voice, not overly operatic, is what is needed for these simple shepherd/shepherdess songs, from the Auvergne region of France. Netania Devrath is perfect, I like her voice the best on these songs. RIP, Netania.

I was introduced to this by a Dubonnet advert in the 70's so that piece of vulgarity served a purpose in the same way as that 'demeaning to women' porn has done more recently.
