Scotch-Irish tenor Sydney MacEwan (1908-1991) sings Marshall's "I Hear You Calling Me," made famous by John McCormack. MacEwan gained fame recording and touring and later decided to become a priest. He had special permission to continue to record and tour and released at least one album for Columbia Masterworks after his ordination in 1944. I'm not sure when this was recorded.

Wonderful rendition. Superb diction and phrasing. Better interpretation even than McCormack. Every word crystal clear and together tells the story.

I have never seen a discography of Father MacEwan, but he certainly was still recording in the age of the vinyl LP. I suspect he might have re-recorded earlier 78rpm discs. I have an LP of Christmas Carols performed by Father MacEwan with a choir, which certainly is not a reissue of 78s, but a specially prepared album. I suspect there were others, too. He appeared in Australia, also, after Ordination to the priesthood, but before the US tour.

Thank you for posting! Father MacEwan certainly gives an excellent rendition of this McCormack favorite! It is very similar to the McCormack recording from 1927 which is my favorite because McCormack's singing has an emotion that I don't feel is there in his earlier versions. Father MacEwan captures that!!

Lovely voice. He knew his limitations, vocally, and cleverly worked within them. Taking the song down a tone suited him perfectly as he would never have managed McCormack's top A, far less sung pp. domhnull

Altra scoperta interessante, sempre cantanti con gusto nella parola ed eleganza, il canto non è legato solo al suono ma principalmente alla parola grazie Prof

Thank you for sending me this beautiful song sung by Fr. Sydney MacEwan. My Goodness how like John Mc.Cormack he was. That is one of my favourite songs. I still sing it at parties and sing songs here at home always goes down well. What a wonderful voice he had. R.I. P. Sidney MacEwan you will never be forgotten.

There really is quite a resemblance isn't there? MacEwan auditioned for McCormack who told him he should sing. I recently found a sealed Columbia album of his ("Scotch and Irish Songs") and the liner notes note this and also ".. As a priest, he has received permission to continue to make records and limited personal appearances, notable a six weeks tour of the United States in 1955. The proceeds of his work are devoted to the Church Extension in the Diocese of Argyll, where he is stationed.."

Excellent! Is it just me, or is his voice and pronunciation almost identical to that of John McCormack? I thought sure it was a McCormack record at the beginning. The resemblance is remarkable. Mighty fine tenor. Extremely unusual to have permission to continue after ordination. I suspect the repertoire was submitted for approval, however.

I really do appreciate this video clip. I have been a fan of Father Sydney MacEwan since the 1950s (I am now 74) but this recording is new to me as it is the version recorded by John McCormack that I have always known and admired. This going straight into my Realplayer collection...
