So much love for Cal Tjader. In addition to his talent as a vibraphonist, drummer, and pianist (his wife was also an excellent pianist), Cal had a knack for picking stellar sidemen. Of course, my favorite quintet of his was when he had Mongo on conga and Willie Bobo on timbales, with Al McKibbon on bass and Vince Guaraldi at the piano - does it get any better? But this 1970 outing was also super hip, with the Escovedo brothers, Pete and Coke on percussion, along with conguero Michael Smithe. Cal was truly one of a kind and is sorely missed!
