Yes, this is the original 1972 Decca label recording of country artist Cal Smith's first #1 smash hit. This song was written by "Whispering" BIll Anderson, who was inspired to write it by an encounter he and his wife had with a couple of old, "God-fearing", church-going women that came into the restaurant/bar they were eating at. To all of those "self-righteous" people, who nag about everyonelse's problems but their own: this song is for you. Enjoy!

Sometimes I wonder, why is it, Country Music from this early ages (60ies and 70ies) touches and moves us so deeply. Is it the warmth and mellow, the simplicety of the songs, it's predictable arrangements, this yodel-like sob in their voices. Anyway, what so ever: as we speak about C & W. it's just this episode that represents, what we call REAL COUNTRY MUSIC

Working on air at a small town radio station, I got lots of Mrs. Johnson. And every time one called with a sermon or "Why don't you play nothing but gospel music". I played this 45 and put lots of miles on it.

Every time I think of drinking, this song comes to mind. However, the rhymes? I would've chosen some different words.

YHWH does admonish us not come to HIM as a drunkard;we are not to idolize nor worship anything in HIS creation; but still folks are frail creatures with a flesh body that is never satisified; oh well alcoholism is an affliction, better to have the HOLY SPIRIT then the wine and spirits!

I've always liked this song and it's message. Only God can judge us. When we point a finger, there's three more pointing back at us ~ Bob Coltrain Kennedy

No one has posted any Country yet. Yes, I know that was probably intentional. But in keeping with the ecumenical spirit of the group, I give you Cal Smith.
